More than Twenty-five years ago, Greenville Technical Charter High School was born of the vision of Dr. Barton and a small group of parents who championed a middle college high school and school choice. Since then, thanks to community leaders and members of the SC Government, we have thrived. Annually, GTCHS selects two people who have been instrumental in making the vision a reality and who are champions for the children of Greenville and students of GTCHS. These Charter Champions are recognized and celebrated at an event in the spring which also showcases our students and successful programs. Please join us in recognizing our Charter Champions.
"Every Child deserves a champion"
Rita Pierson
A champion: Someone who fights for you; someone who unwaveringly supports your cause. Charter Champions are those who believe in the power of school choice, who are committed to ensuring that every child has a quality option for free, public education and who are persistent in their efforts to improve the outcomes for our children. In particular, they are advocates for Greenville Technical Charter High School, the first charter high school in the state of South Carolina. GTCHS is grateful for our champions. The role they play in promoting strong legislation, providing financial contributions, and leading innovative practices is vital for the students we serve.
Dr. Keith Miller became the 2nd president of Greenville Technical College (GTC) in 2008, bringing to the position 12 years of experience as a college president in Illinois. Dr. Miller began his own college education at a community college, earning an associate’s degree in technical education before going on to earn a bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate’s degree in adult and continuing education. His experience as a two-year college student informed his interest in helping students feel supported from day one to graduation and in ensuring equitable opportunities for success.
Throughout his tenure, Dr. Miller has been dedicated to continuing the vision of a strong middle college program where high school students can take college classes. He has fostered two fundamental aspects of the GTCHS & GTC partnership: first, providing space on campus by establishing a location for the GTCHS Student Learning Center and performing building renovations; and second, providing affordable college classes by developing the Early College program, which was piloted with GTCHS students. The number of students graduating GTCHS with an associate’s degree has tripled in the past three years due, in large part, to Dr. Keith Miller’s support.

New Horizon Family Health Services was established in 1992 as Greenville Community Health Center. At that time, the center had only a few doctors and served about 2,500 patients. In 1999, following a merger with Slater-Marietta Health and Human Services, Greenville Community Health Center became New Horizon Family Health Services, Inc. with the mission to provide quality, affordable, compassionate patient-centered health care to improve the health of the communities they serve. Today, they serve nearly 23,000 patients across multiple locations.
New Horizon has worked with GTCHS for the last three years to provide an incredible experience for students on the Health Sciences track. It is often difficult for high school-aged students to find internships within the medical field, but New Horizon has purposefully created a place where GTCHS students can thrive as interns. They also work with GTCHS’ Future Physicians Club to provide HIPAA training, tours of their facilities, and public health seminars. New Horizon Family Health Services has not only enhanced students’ skills, but changed the trajectory of their lives.
